微笑
The Passive-Aggressive Smile
One of the most complicated emojis in Chinese WeChat culture. The mouth curves up, but the eyes are
wide open and completely lifeless — a smile with dead eyes. It's a forced smile that conveys annoyance,
disagreement, or passive-aggressiveness, without starting an open conflict. A perfectly polite way to
show you are not pleased, without saying a single rude word. If you stare at it for too long, it starts
to feel deeply unsettling.
Real Means
- I'm annoyed but I won't argue
- Fine. (with heavy sarcasm)
- Whatever. I'm done talking
- I disagree but I'll let it go
Example
行吧,你说了算
Fine, have it your way
Meaning: I don't agree, but I'm not going to fight about it.

⚠️ This is NOT a happy smile. Look at the eyes — if there's no warmth, they're not happy. However, some
older users genuinely use it to mean "hello" or "thank you." Judge by the sender.
